Once in a hundred years! A ceremony to befit a king Kings, queens, traditional authorities, opposition leaders and thousands of Namibians from various ethnic groups gathered at Omhedi, close the Angolan border, last weekend to pay tribute to King Mandume yaNdemufayo in one of the most important reconciliatory and commemorative events of the last century. Thousands of people, including our founding father Dr Sam Nujoma, former president Dr Hifikepunye Pohamba and acting president Dr Hage Geingob, joined in the unifying spirit of the event. The vibrant crowd remained transfixed through the ceremony and scorching heat, commemorating the death of King Mandume. An important part of the four-day ceremony was the unveiling of a statue of the legendary Mandume, who died on 6 February 1917. Mandume is remembered for his resistance to the colonial forces, his strong value system as well as the reforms he implemented to unite his people. These included the protection of women and the rights of the poor. He was little more than a child in 1911 when he ascended to the throne at 17 after the death after his uncle Nande, who had no sons to succeed him. It was a tumultuous time in the north with a kingdom split by borders drawn up by European powers; a history of war with the Portuguese in Angola where three quarters of the Oukwanyama people lived; conflict with the Union of South Africa soldiers who occupied Namibia in WWI and a people struggling after years of drought. At the end of his final battle, Mandume is believed to have gallantly taken his own life, rather than fall into enemy hands, ending his short reign of only 6 years. His body is said to have been taken into Angola and his head buried at the Owambo Campaign Memorial in Windhoek. Today, the Oukwanyama kingdom is once again recognised, ruled by Ohamba yOvakwanyama Nelumbu (Queen of Ovakwanyama). Namibia has come a long way in the last hundred years. It has fought for democracy, gained its independence and ushered in an era of unity and peace. The centenary commemoration is a tribute not only to Mandume, but for all those who sacrificed their lives and paved the way for freedom. http://www.gondwana-collection.com Video produced by Coolbox Cinema info@coolboxcinema.com http://www.coolboxcinema.com

Miss Universe 2016, will be the 65th Miss Universe pageant. It will be held on 30 January 2017 in the Philippines.Pia Wurtzbach of the Philippines will crown her successor at the end of the event. At least 90 contestants from around the world will compete for the 2016 title. On 18 July 2016, Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach made a courtesy call with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in regards to hosting Miss Universe 2016 in the Philippines. Duterte was initially open to the idea but refused to shoulder the expenses through government funding. Later reports revealed that the Philippine Department of Tourism clarified that the President was never opposed to the idea of hosting the pageant but only had concerns with the financing. The Department of Tourism confirmed on 28 July 2016 that the Philippines will host the pageant. According to DOT Media Director Ina Zara, Miss Universe Organization President, Paula Shugart said that other countries were considered to host Miss Universe 2016, but the Philippines has been a prime choice for the organization. The Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Ynares Center in Antipolo City, Clark Expo Amphitheater in Angeles, Pampanga and the Philippine Arena in Bocaue and Santa Maria, Bulacan are being considered by the Department of Tourism as the main venue of the pageant. President Rodrigo Duterte also made requests for the Miss Universe 2016 organizers to stage auxiliary events outside Metro Manila, in locations such as Boracay, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Palawan, and Vigan. The funds needed to stage the pageant in the country will come entirely from the private businesses. Among the reported sponsors are Chinese-Filipino businessman Henry Sy and Japanese billionaire Kazuo Okada. The Okada Manila Luxury Hotel, currently in construction, will serve as the residential venue for the Miss Universe 2016 candidates. The projected expense for the event is $11 million USD. Sierra Leone will debut at Miss Universe 2016.[3] This is the third time the Philippines is hosting the pageant, previous editions where held in 1974 and 1994.
